Eine Einführung:Joomla! ist ein leistungsfähiges, einfach zu konfigurierendes und populäres Open Source CMS. Joomla! basiert auf der Skriptsprache PHP, die ebenso wie die verwendete Datenbank unter der GNU General Public License (GPL) steht, und ist kostenlos erhältlich.
Joomla! ist aus dem Open-Source-Projekt Mambo hervorgegangen, das früher als Mambo Open Source bzw. MOS bezeichnet wurde.
Der Name kommt ist die Lautumschreibung aus der Suaheli-Sprache des Wortes „Jumla“, das als „das ganze“ oder auch „als ganzes“ übersetzt werden könnte - und als Betonung der Entwickler-Gemeinschaft (Community) gewählt wurde.
Der Name wurde am 1.9.05 bekanntgegeben, nachdem sich die Firma Miro (Mambo) und deren Entwickler zerstritten hatten. (Kommerzielle Gründe) Insbesondere weil Miro die Mambo Foundation ohne Einbeziehung der Community und Entwickler gegründet hat und es wohl die ersten Pläne gab, Mambo zu kommerzialisieren.Das komplette Entwicklerteam von Mambo hat sich daraufhin einstimmig entschlossen, nicht unter dem Dach der Foundation zu arbeiten. Dort soll die Entwicklung ausgehend von der jetzigen Codebasis weitergeführt werden. Der Name des Projektes wurde in Joomla!, da Miro die Rechte an der Marke "Mambo" besitzt. Das bisher unter dem Namen "Mambo" bekannte CMS wird von den Entwicklern künftig unter dem Namen Joomla! weitergeführt. Damit setzt man sich klar von der Mambo Foundation ab, die unter der Kontrolle von Miro steht. Die neue Projektseite findet sich auf www.joomla.org.
Inzwischen (7.9.05) wurde auf der offiziellen Seite für das Joomla-Logo ein Contest aufgerufen. Am 21.9.05 wird der Gewinner und das Logo dann bekanntgegeben.

The development team created a web site called Open Source Matters to protest the actions of Miro. Lead Developer Andrew Eddie, aka "MasterChief," wrote this article which appeared on the announcements section of the public forum at mamboserver.com: Open Letter to the Community.
Miro continiues to work on Mambo, and calls this a "childish attempt" of the previous core team.
Open Source Matters
On August 17, 2005, the core development team unanimously left the Mambo project as a result of Miro International establishing the Mambo Foundation without consulting the core development team or the project's community developers. In a letter to the community, Andrew Eddie, Mambo's project manager, stated that open source software should be open to the participation of anybody who can contribute value and is willing to work with the community. Peter Lamont, Miro CEO, claimed Miro would transfer all copyrights of Mambo to the foundation, however, failed to do so by the time the core developers left the project. Miro did eventually transfer the copyrights on August 23, 2005. Another reason given by the core developers for their departure is that the first board of regents of the foundation was appointed by Peter Lamont, and consisted of a majority of members being employees of Miro.
On September 1, 2005, the leaders of Open Source Matters announced that their new product will be named Joomla! The name is a phonetic spelling of the Swahili word jumla meaning "all together" or "as a whole". It was chosen to reflect the commitment of the development team and community to the project. The first release of Joomla! (Joomla! 1.0.0) will be a re-branded release of Mambo 4.5.2.3 combined with other bug fixes. In the project's roadmap, the core developers say Joomla! 2.0 will be a completely re-written code base built with PHP 5. Their new site can be found at www.joomla.org.
